Summer Scholars Program

The LSU Summer Scholars Program is an eight-week summer program that prepares selected under-represented minority students to make a successful transition from high school to the University. This summer experience offers students the opportunity to become adjusted to the academic, personal, and social challenges that may encounter at LSU. Students are provided with a structured environment conducive to building the fundamental skills necessary to enhance the likelihood of successful completion of a bachelor’s degree.
Selected students are offered opportunities to adjust to the demands of the University both in and out of the classroom.
Students will:

  • Enroll in 6-7 hours of coursework. The courses will include the appropriate English course and an additional course.
  • Attend study/discussion groups with supplemental instructors and tutors.
  • Participate in social and cultural activities.
  • Reside in on-campus housing for entire summer term.
  • Attend academic, self-improvement, and leadership workshops/seminars.
  • Meet with a counselor for academic advising, course scheduling, and assistance with career goal development.
  • Eligibility

    Students selected to participate in the Summer Scholars Program must be:
    • Admitted to the University
    • Eligible to enroll in college level mathematics and English courses.
    • A member of an under-represented minority group at LSU.
    • Able to attend the program for the entire eight week summer session.
    • Have official transcripts and ACT or SAT scores on file at LSU.
    • Plan to continue enrollment at LSU in the fall and graduate from the University.
    • Recommended by either their high school principal or counselor and a teacher.

Gala on the Bluff is designed to support students who want to succeed in business related careers and want to work closely with successful alumni and community supporters who will serve as mentors during their pusuit of personal and academic success.

Aged-Out Foster Youth Education Program:
An Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Each year the foundation will give four scholarships to students aging-out of foster care who have been accepted or are enrolled in a degree or certificate program. Graduating seniors and aged-out youth in post-secondary programs will be eligible to apply for these scholarships if they meet the requirements.

Applicants may qualify for the following awards.

Darrell Mays Scholarships - up to $20,000 for four year degree programs

Ron Cates Scholarship - up to $6,000 for four year degree programs

Albin Dunbar Hendricks Scholarships - up to $6,000 for associate degrees programs and certificates

AXA Achievementsm Scholarship

The AXA Achievementsm Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report   provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation.

Florida A&M

Florida A&M University is providing an outstanding opportunity for Black women entering college in the fall of 2009. Dr. Jason Black is the Principal Investigator of a recently awarded $552,000 NSF Grant entitled African-American Women in Computer Science. The grant provides scolarships from $4000 to $10,000 per year for female African American Students.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

Gamma Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. takes great pleasure in honoring outstanding female scolars of academic achievement. Six one-time academic scolarships will be awarded by the sorority in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1000.00) each. One memorial scholarship will also be awarded:
* The Audrey Daste LeBlanc Memorial Scholarship with a value of $600.00 (the recipient must attend Southern University).
Young ladies applying for scholarships must meet the following criteria:
1. Female graduating senior.
2. Verification that applicant has passed all parts of GEE and will participate in regular May Graduation Ceremony.
3. High moral standards, leadership ability, self-confidence, and has plans to purse a college education.
4. A cumulative average of 3.0 or above.
5. Complete and submit scholarship packet that includes the application, a resume, transcript for the previous seven semesters and 2 letters of recommendation (one must be from a high school teacher, guidance counselor or administrator).
6. Participation in essay writing contest.
7. Participation in personal interviews.
8. Show evidence of community involvement.

Delta Sigma Theta

Mary Carlisle Meadors Memorial Scholarship (4-year scholarship) For eligible female graduation seniors planning to attend Southern University-BR.

The scholarship is a 4-year award at $1000 per semester. The following areas will be considered in awarding the scholarship:
1. Cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher
2. Official ACT score
3. Official signed transcript
4. Participation in school and community organizations
5. Honors and awards
6. Essay -- "What A College Education Means to Me"
7. Letter of recommendation on official school letterhead (high school teacher or counselor)
8. Financial need.

OLOL Franciscan Scholarship

Minimum Criteria:
  H/S GPA 3.5 or better
  ACT Composite score of 22 or SAT Composite score of 1030

Additional Selection Criteria:
  Essay
  Record of activities and leadership
Award a full tuition scholarship package for 4 years (8 consecutive semesters) towards an undergraduate degree.

Burger King Scholars Program

Every year, the BURGER KINGtrademark Scholars Program helps graduating high school seniors build brighter futures. The awards ($1,000 each) are sponsored annually by the fundraising efforts of Burger King Corporation, BURGER KINGtrademark franchisees and our restaurant guests in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Criteria:
GPA 2.5 or higher
Work part time for a minimum of 10/week or 40 weeks/yr
Actively involved in community service activities
Financial need (1040 form required)
Plan to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university, or vocational/technical scool by Fall of 2010.
